Jack’s Birth Story

Jack has now been in this world for 18 months and I would like to go back to the day he entered this world and document his birth story.  It is a bit lengthily, it was hard to cut out any detail.  I wanted to document the entire story, unrated, and not softening anything.  I just want to give all of you expecting moms a head’s up… My experience was not a walk in the park.  I definitely made some mistakes along the way and hope to learn from then next time.  However I do not regret for a second my choice for a home birth and I would recommend it to any healthy woman out there.

It was the 2nd weekend in February 2008.  My dad, who is a salesman for Riddell was staying at our home because he had a conference in Columbus that weekend.  He spent the night Thursday, Feb. 7th.  We joked that we might have to kick him out if I went into labor!  We had planned a home birth with the midwives, Greg, and I present.  We wanted it to be personal without spectators, even family.  I was now a week past my “due date” and very impatient.  I was walking the mall daily and adding cayenne pepper to every meal for the past 3 weeks, hoping the old wives tale of spicy food would trigger labor.  I don’t think it worked.  However, on Thursday evening, when my dad arrived, I started to notice what felt like Braxton hicks contractions again, a rhythmic wave of tightening around my belly, not painful or uncomfortable.  Occasionally I checked my watch.  They came and went very irregularly.  I figured after a few hours they would stop again like every other false alarm of Braxton hicks I’d experienced.  I watched some TV with Greg and my dad then we headed to bed.  Throughout the night I woke up multiple times as and the contractions had continued, not showing any signs of regularity or rising intensity.  I thought this might be different.  No other Braxton Hicks lasted this long but I didn’t want to get my hopes up.  I think I did tell Greg at one point that this could be early labor – but then again, I often told him that, just to turn around a few hours later and say “just kidding”.

I woke at 7am and went to the bathroom and noticed a small amount of blood.  I was secretly excited, hopeful, and nervous, but didn’t want to get my hopes up quite yet.  I said bye to my dad as he left for his conference, not mentioning the likely pending labor.  I didn’t want to distract him from his conference if it was going to be a false alarm.  I went back up stairs and told Greg.  Fortunately he had that Friday off work.  He was very excited.  We waited another hour or two and when the contractions still hadn’t let up, we called Abby, one of our midwives.  She said it sounded like it was the real deal.  She said to note if the contractions became more consistent and stronger and to give her an update by 11am.  She also called our other midwife, Kelley, and apprentice midwife Jill to give them the heads up.  Abby said we should rest up and go about our morning without getting too excited or spending too much energy.  Well we couldn’t help but be a little excited, and nervous too.

Now recognizing I was in labor and we hadn’t taken 9 month pregnancy photos yet which was something I really wanted to do.  So I grabbed the camera and Greg took some shots.  We took some in our bedroom by the window and in the baby room.  I made Greg pose for a few, which was a bit comical, but he did it.  We took some together using the timer on our camera.  You can see in the photos when I’m in a contraction because my belly sticks out like a bicep on steroids.  (I posted some of these photos on the previous posting).  Contractions still were not painful, they were just there.  Greg and I then watched some TV and relaxed on the couch.  I called Abby back at 11am and told her the timing of the contractions, still not very consistent, and not really increasing in strength, but not letting up either.  Abby suggested we go for a walk and continue monitoring everything.  She instructed us to call when it began to feel uncomfortable and when I felt like just lying down or if my water broke.  We then called some of our family including my dad.  He later told me he told all the High School coaches he met that day that he was going to be a first time grandpa, including Guest speaker, Jim Tressel!  Dad never holds back!  So far labor was a piece of cake.  I could feel the tightening in my belly but it wasn’t painful.

We decided to take her up on the suggestion of going for a walk.  Being that it was February, we drove to Meijer and walked a few laps around the store.  I could feel the contractions strengthening a bit so we headed home to relax and get lunch/dinner.  It was around 3pm but we were hungry.  We had purchased several “labor” snacks such as grapes, other fruits, nuts, veggies, vitamin water, and of course ice chips.  But we didn’t have any meals ready so decided to have a celebratory “last super” and settled on California Pizza Kitchen take out.  This is where some of my bad choices began that evening.  I don’t know what I was thinking getting a pizza while in labor.  My favorite veggie pizza from CPK just sounded so good at the time and Greg will never turn down pizza.  As Greg came back with our meal my contractions were strengthening further and finally becoming more consistent but still 4-5 min. apart.

I called Abby again after finishing the pizza around 4pm because I was becoming uncomfortable, not painful though.  The cats were still out and about.  Maddie could definitely tell something was up.  She was lying on the couch behind me and followed me around if I got up.  I had been drinking a little water but not as much as I should.  I figured I could drink more as I needed it, as labor progressed.  Abby arrived around 5pm.  She asked several questions then check me and the baby.  She said I was about 4-5 centimeters.  I thought, well that’s good; I guess something is working, but still a way’s to go.  Abby called Kelly and Jill and they were now on their way over.  The discomfort was persisting so I decided to try out the birthing tub we rented.  Greg filled it up and when it was warm enough for the baby I stepped in.  I loved the tub!  It was so relaxing and the discomfort definitely decreased with the warm water around my belly.  I thought all women should have access to a warm birthing tub for their labor.  We also played some card games while waiting through the labor.  After a bit, the intensity was increasing further so cards were done and I was just trying to relax.  Greg suggested popping in the movie he picked out.  While making preparations for labor, Greg suggested buying a funny movie for during labor.  He said a funny movie always makes him feel better.  I wasn’t crazy about the idea but decided to go along with it.  So we poped in Greg’s movie, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”.  A little into the movie I asked to turn it off and put in relaxing music and focus on relaxation and some of the techniques we learned in our hypno birthing classes.  As the evening progressed I was beginning to feel some pain, but it was tolerable, and the tub helped tremendously.  I also began to feel a little nauseous so I did not drink much water or eat the snacks we prepared.  I did have a few ice chips.  It was now 10 pm.  Up until this point labor was a synch, the tub was great, relaxation techniques worked, the soft music was calming and the tub was wonderful.

However I would say 10pm was definitely the turning point.  Funny that later my dad told me he drove by our place around 10pm after his conference to make sure he didn’t see an ambulance!  I think that was a little overkill but I was his little girl.  For me, things began to go downhill at this time and I primarily blame dehydration.  Pain levels were increasing; I thought I must be at 10cm by now!  At this point even the warm tub did not relive my discomfort.   I continued to rejected water and was becoming dehydrated.  I spent some time out of the tub which felt better for a little while but nothing was comfortable anymore.  I was ready for labor to be over and my baby to arrive.  I told the midwives I didn’t feel well and wanted to start pushing.  Earlier in the afternoon, Abby said I would know when I felt the urge to push and at this moment I think I decided this must be it because I was uncomfortable and wanted it to all be over so I convinced myself this was “the urge to push”.  Abby checked me and said I was nearly 10 cm but not quite.  I got back in and out of the tub for the next hour.  At that point I asked again to push.  The midwives said ok and I had a go at it.  It felt like nothing was happening.  I was exerting so much effort, I gave it everything I had and was disappointed.  I think I expected I’d push a few times and the baby would slip out and that would be it.  My mom said all three of her labors were short, pushing fast and it was all a pleasant experience. She also had a natural birth with no medications.  I guess I did not inherit the smooth labor.

It was definitely painful at this point and the dehydration was clouding my mind.  I continued pushing and pushing and after sometime we all decided I needed the help of gravity.  The tub was not making things more comfortable anymore so I decided to try pushing out of the water with the help of gravity.  I had always imagined having my baby birthed in the comfort of the warm bath but at this point I just wanted the baby out.  I tried on the bed and on the birthing stool.  Throughout this time I was checked regularly and it was decided that the baby was stuck, behind my pelvic bones.  I also continued to turn down water.  I was beginning to think there would never be an end to my pushing, it was all in vein.  An hour had gone by, then 2.  I thought it would be nice to have our baby on a nice even numbered day, Feb. 8 sounded good and the sooner the better, but midnight quickly passed and then 1am.  I continued pushing, spending all of my energy and feeling like no progress was being made.  Eventually Abby, Kelley, and Jill noted that the baby was moving through the birth canal and was no longer stuck.  I thought for sure now the baby would ease out in another push or two…. Not the case.  After pushing for over 2 hours, which I was told was long but not unususal for a first timer, I thought this baby would never come.  I seriously, truly, believed my baby would be stuck in me forever, never coming out.  Dehydration was definitely affecting my mind.  Greg was starting to freak out.  I kept asking him to help me, help this baby get out.  He hadn’t seen me in this state before, feeling compeltly helpless.  Thoughout this process Abby, Kelley, and Jill continued to encourage me and were supportive.  I asked to go to the hospital, I asked for drugs, I asked to have this baby cut out of me, I didn’t care what happened at this point, I wanted it all to be over.  Greg felt really helpless and scared because of the way I was acting.  I was pretty serious at one point about quitting and going to the hospital.  However in reality I DID care and Greg, Abby, Kelley, and Jill all knew this and encouraged me that I was progressing and it wouldn’t be too much longer.  I did think it out and couldn’t imagine at that point how I could possibly get myself into a car and to a hospital, that seemed utterly impossible.  Abby also said there was nothing the hospital would give me at that point, being as far as I was (although I didn’t believe I was that close to the end) and I truly did not want that, I wanted no regrets.  In reality, the baby and I were healthy outside of my dehydration.  Jill then received a phone call that another of her clients went into labor and she was the doula for that mom-to-be so she had to leave.  She didn’t want to go with me so close to the end but she had to.  I still had Abby and Kelly there.  One of them suggested Greg find a mirror so I could see the baby’s head, and they guided my hand to feel the head.  For a second I thought maybe I was progressing but then I went back to my dehydrated misconception state of mind and thought, no, this baby is in me permanently!  I pushed and pushed and my eyes didn’t see the head coming any closer, even though it was.  In that last hour I definitely realized what the urge to push meant!  I couldn’t even control it; my body was pushing without me even thinking.  As the head was coming closer Kelley monitored the baby’s heart rate every minuite.  Before that it was every 15 minutes.  Kelley said it was time, I needed to step it up further and get the baby out.  The head was deep in the birth canal for too long and it needed to be out.  I thought “are you crazy, I have stepped it up this entire 2 hour and 30 min. of pushing, how can I give any more!  I continued to push with all my might, still thinking this baby will seriously never show its face and then, all the sudden someone said the head is out.  I thought, “ya right, you’re lying to me, this baby is not ever coming!”.  I looked down and saw the head but still, I was sure they were lying, I was just imaging the head, it wasn’t real.  Then a second later I felt the whole body flop out and I could not believe it.  It was a miracle!  I seriously thought I would never meet this baby.  It was an ENORMOUS sigh of relief.  They handed me the baby with Greg my by side we just relished the moment.  I was beyond exhausted mentally and physically, and in disbelief that it was all over.

Kelley asked if it was a boy or girl?  We didn’t pay attention at first but then noticed we had a baby boy! Baby Jack Joseph Prenger.  He wasn’t crying when he was born so Kelley was tapping on his feet trying to get him to make a sound (he was obviously breathing fine) and he then let out a cry.  His skin was slightly purple when he first arrived but quickly pinkened up.  Kelley said the cord was wrapped around his neck twice, but loosely.  She cut the cord and was the one to catch Jack along with Abby as he was born.  We planned Greg to catch but he was unable because I was leaning against him as he held me up during the delivery.  Then Abby said I needed to push again to get the placenta out.  I thought “this is ridiculous; you can’t seriously ask me to do this again.”  But she was serious and business like so I listened, and luckily one easy push and that was done.  Abby and Kelley checked Jack and I to make sure everyone was healthy then they gave our new family some quiet bonding time.

Greg and I relaxed on the couch with our new baby just cuddling him and watching him.  We also decided we’d never have kids again after that ordeal.  (Obviously, I was still severely dehydrated and our minds clouded by our intense labor).  I let Jack explore if he was hungry but he didn’t see interested in latching on quite yet.  Abby said not to worry, that he will.  After about 45 min. they came back to check on us and helped me to the shower.  My body was shaking but Abby said that was normal, after birth and also the muscle contractions helped control the blood loss.  It was a little difficult walking up the stairs to the shower but I can’t tell you how good it felt to take a shower in our own home. It felt so surreal that it was all over and the shower felt amazing.   The midwives cleaned up the birthing area while I showered.  After showering I joined Jack and Greg in our bed.  Kelley weighted and measured Jack and did a few additional checks on him.  He was 9 lb 8 oz and 21.5 inches.  I couldn’t believe the weight.  I was only 6 lb 1oz so I was sure I’d have a small or even average baby.  I thought no wonder it was a challenge!  Jack then, relaxed and comforted, latched on easily for a recovery meal.  Abby and Kelley then left and our new family had a much needed and deserved sleep.

Afterthoughts

Now, 18 months later, reflecting back on the birth, I realize several things I would do differently.  The biggest is to stay hydrated, and especially load up on water the second I realize I’m in labor and throughout early labor and as much as possible during labor even if I feel nauseous.  I would also try more ice chips.  I think the dehydration definitely clouded my thinking and fatigued my muscles, putting me at a disadvantage.  Next time I would choose a lighter, healthier, and milder pre-labor meal.  I would utilize our birthing relaxation techniques much more.  I felt like we hardly used the tools we had and I would take that part more seriously.  Next time I will have known the feeling of “the urge to push”.  I feel like I may have tried to push too soon, before my body was ready and therefore tired myself out.  I might not watch a movie or play cards but just rest quietly.  Abby also suggested I walk around more in earlier labor to let gravity help bring the baby down.  Things I would do the same:  I will definitely use CHOICE midwives again!  I loved my experience with them and thought they were great and fit Greg and my philosophy and comfort and desires perfectly.  I would definitely do a home birth and utilize the birthing tub as much as possible.  I loved that I didn’t have to get in a car and drive to a bright, unfamiliar, noisy hospital with people telling me what to do.  I loved that I could shower in my shower and sleep in my bed.  I would again choose a small crowd of Greg, the midwives and maybe Jack, not sure on that one yet.  We will have more children in the future, despite our initial feelings after the labor, but not any time soon.  I hope you enjoyed my story, real, bare bones, and not sugar coated, and I hope I didn’t scare anyone.  I loved my homebirth experience, despite the challenges I faced.

Inaugural Giveaway: Green Magic Skin Care

Mom Going Green presents it’s inaugural Green GIVEAWAY!

Congradulations to Angie Arndts, the winner of the Green Magic gift basket.

2008-choice-fund-raiser-016Last summer we attended the CHOICE summer picnic and Charity auction benefiting CHOICE, the non-profit midewife group we used for Jack’s home birth (which I hope to re-cap at his 18 month birthday blog in August).  At the auction I bidon a basket of all-natural, Green Magic herbal creams and salves, homemade by Jill Schroer, one of Jack’s midwives.  I was so excited when I won the gift basket, my first silent auction win!   I have been using the products regularly and I love them.  I love that I know what all of the ingredients are.  There are no ingredients in Jills products that sound like they belong in chemistry class.  I feel 100% confident that the salves made by Jill that I use on Jack’s skin are safe and healthy for him.  Years ago, I didn’t realizethat there are other options for skin care besides what is sold in drug stores.  I’m so glad I have found so many wonderful options for Jack that are natural and chemical free.

Wigs, Hops & Shower

We had a busy, interesting, and fun weekend.  It started off on Saturday with Daddy and Jack playing at home while JamieLee and I went to an event relay for lifefor work, Relay for Life, sponsored by The American Cancer Society in Newark, Ohio, about 30 min. from New Albany.   It was a perfect sunny, warm afternoon.  I was glad to be outside.  The event was for a great cause, raising money for Cancer Research.  JamieLee and I were there to offer stretching and myofascial treatment to the participants and to meet people and get Ohio Family & Sports Chiropractic out in the community. relay for life tent

Wigs for Women

The vendor next to us was a Newark hair salon offering free hair cuts and donations to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths, a program to donate your hair for wigs made for cancer patients.  Pantene partnered with several sponsors to offer “ Wigs Helping Women,” free wigs for cancer patients.  They need 8″ for a ponytail and 6 ponytails make a wig.   Find out how to donate here.  I saw many women of all ages throughoutut the afternoon visiting the hair salon table and donating.  It was moving and inspiring to see young teenagers scared to death to get their hair chopped but doing it proudly.  This reminded me of my OSU Rowing teammate Amanda who used to do this regularly with Locks of Love(which I learned charges for their wigs).  I also kept looking down at my very long ponytail and felt pretty embarrassed standing there while so many others donated with much shorter hair than me.  I contemplated throughout the event “should I? Shouldn’t I? Should I?”  In the end I thought, why not!  I thought it’s probably something I should do sometime in my life, especially with my family history of cancer, and I really did need a hair cut.  Afterwards I felt good that I contributed to a wig that will hopefully make someones day!

Hopin’ Gallery Hop

Saturday evening  JamieLee and I went to the Gallery Hop in the Short North.  I told JamieLee about the monthly Gallery Hop a while ago, thinking it was a fun event to represent a little bit of Columbus to this California native.  Finally the scheduling worked out and we made it to the hop!  This was only my second time, my first being my freshman year at Ohio State.  We grabbed dinner at one of my favorites, The Northstar Cafe, then headed downtown.  We saw many beautiful gallery’s and jewelry stands.  There was a cool store called Tiger Tree which sells many products made by recycled children’s books.  I really liked their blue polka dot shoes!  I also liked their reusable shopping bags which could be folded into a pock-sized pouch.  I enjoyed the numerous ethnic stores, the girl on stilts, a wine tasting, and the plethora of local bands, including a drum-line.  JamieLee really liked the LARGE girl belly dancing who fortunately I did not see, and the toothpick girl.  Check out her take on the night at her blog Calie and Me

Shower Baby Shower

Jack 16 mo 003Sunday I went to my good rowing friend Heather (aka Feldmann) Strang’s baby shower.  I am really excited for my friend, who with her husband, helped Greg and I meet for the first time back in college.  Heather was looking beautiful and I hope she has a wonderful birthing experience. Jack 16 mo 005

I also visited with a few other college friends who were there.  At the shower there were some tasty treats and a few traditional baby shower games, which I am never good at.

After the shower I picked up Greg and Jack to head to the Prenger homestead for a multi-birthday Celebration.  Most of Greg’s family have their birthdays in June (and February).   Grandma and the kids thought it would be fun to ride around in the wheel barrel.Jack 16 mo 008

It was a tireing but fun and fulfilling weekend.

Jack’s New Ride

We were looking for a stroller that would work well for a long, (potentially) fast run or for a leisurely walk on an off-road trail.  So a fast and all-terrain vehicle!

What we researched/wanted:

-          Wheel size:  16” or 20” is best for jogging/running

-          Fixed front wheel:  This is important for stability at higher speeds.

-          Stroller Weight:  The lighter the better!

-          Safety:  a no-brainer

-          Ability to fit into our trunk:  A must!

-          Recline:  important for use with a younger baby

-          Reviews:  A lot of good ones

-          Price:  Lets not let it get out of control, but we want quality, reliability, and a good reputation

-          Weight Capacity:  We want this stroller to last until Jack can keep up on his own bike!

Strollers that met most or all of our criteria:

-          Schwinn – not great reviews

-          Baby Jogger Performance – significantly more expensive (over $400) with equivalent reviews to the BOB’s, 20” wheels likely wouldn’t fit in trunk

-          BOB Ironman – 16” x 1.5” light, thin tires, awesome for running, not meant for all-terrain but probably would do alright off-road ($350)

-          BOB SUS D’Lux –light but not as rugged aluminum 16”x2” wheels ($350)

-          BOB SUS – 16” x 2” wheels with high impact composite polymer rims, good for running and off road, 1 lb heavier than D’Lux ($300)

During my research with Greg we looked at a lot of reviews and specs.  We found very helpful information on www.joggingstroller.com and some great reviews on www.amazon.com.  We also checked out the company websites www.bobgear.com.  I’ll cut to the chase.  We chose the BOB SUS Jogging Stroller for its high ratings and ability to excel for running both on and off-road, and for it’s more affordable price.

I Never Thought I’d Get One of These!

Lately I have been getting back into running, thanks to my new employee Susan. I have been wanting to get more involved with local races, I think it makes training more fun and I love getting free shirts and medals! Well I hadn’t been running consistently due to the cold weather ( I was doing more weight/circuit training), but somehow Susan talked me into my first race in a long time, the Fantastic Frigid 5k, a series of 2 5k’s in January sponsored by Columbus Running Company. I don’t know what I was thinking, I hate the cold! I can handle 40’s ok, but the 1st 5k was freeeeeeezing – 9 deg, colder with the wind chill. That weekend was a record cold day for Columbus, the coldest in decades! The 2nd race also lived up to the “frigid” title. There was probably a foot of snow on the entire trail; it was like running through the soft sand on the beach. After the race many competitors were joking about it being their record slowest time! It was definitely an experience. I just have to say thank goodness for Yak Trax! Despite my complaining I did have a good time and I was glad I finally got myself back into the racing crowd. I am looking forward to more racing! My next race is the Dublin St. Patrick’s Day 4 miler.  I am hoping for milder conditions!

So, let me get back to my actual topic for this posting…Jogging Strollers! I never had any interest in a jogging stroller in the past. I thought, if I want to do a workout then I want to do a workout – focused with out distractions of something to push or a potential crying baby. But I started re-thinking this after getting motivated to run again. It has been challenging to find time to get in solid workouts with work and Jack. Recently a friend was raving to me about how nice it is to have her jogging stroller so she can do a run anytime she wants. I picked her brain about some of my concerns. Jack to date has not tolerated long stroller rides; however Shelly mentioned that her children enjoy the faster speed of the jogging stroller much more than traditional strollers and that she had no problem getting in a solid run. She said the key was to have a good quality stroller with a stationary front wheel for a smooth ride. After this encouraging conversation I was actually excited about the idea of running with Jack. So I began researching Jogging strollers. And to my delight, Greg’s parents offered to get us a stroller for Jack’s birthday! Stay tuned for my next post on the results of my Jogging Stroller research and the winning stroller we chose! I will also be posting on Jack’s birthday after the weekend.

Greener Future Friday: Homemade Lip Balm

I received a homemade lip balm kit for Christmas and just made it this week.  It was a lot of fun and I liked the idea of making my own skin care products!  The kit I received is from “The Crafty Beavers”.  The kit came with beeswax, peppermint essential oil and 2 containers.  I mixed the contained ingredients lip-balmwith olive oil and heated it in a double boiler.  It was super simple and fast to make.  My only complaint is that there was not room for all of the lip balm in the containers that came with the kit.  A larger or extra jar would have been nice.  Other than that it worked great.  I have shared the lip balm with my husband and Jack and they both think it’s great.

I think the kit was great but not necessary.  Here are a few websites I found with simple recipes for homemade lip balm!

I like that both of them include a vitamin E capsule broken and added to the mixture!

Portland Wrap-up

I arrived home from Portland Monday late afternoon.  So here’s a re-cap…

Mt. Hood

Mt. Hood

My pumping adventure continued on the plane – it was uneventful, then again at Cincy’s house after she picked me up from the airport.  It was a scenic 15 min. drive to her house, which she shares with 3 roommates.  I saw my first glance at Mt. Hood, which was AMAZING!!  I love the mountains.  They look so majestic and strong.  I was very grateful that Cincy was able to pick me up and share her home with me this weekend.

Cincy had to leave for work as a pharmacist shortly after she picked me up.  So I decided to spend FridayDowntown afternoon exploring downtown Portland.  I attempted to get some info online about the public transportation routs into downtown however my computer kept giving me the blue screen of death over and over again (I thought I had this thing finally fixed, it is possessed!) so I gave up and ventured outside on my own.  Cincy gave me a brief depiction of the area before she left, but due to my poor sense of direction and after walking for about 10 min and feeling lost I back tracked to the Fred Meyer’s Grocery store to ask for direction.  An employee in the store told me which Tri Met bus would take me downtown and mentioned that the Max train offers free transportation from there.  I made it downtown after entertaining the bus driver by the fact that I had never been on a city bus (except once in Columbus, OH 9 yrs ago).

Pioneer Square

Pioneer Square

I walked around Pioneer Square (considered the 4th best public space in the world!) and went to the visitor’s center to get info on bus service to and from my seminar.  The woman at the counter was very friendly and helpful.  Downtown was nice, clean, and pedestrian friendly however, I have had an opportunity to see many great downtowns in the country but not many mountains!  So I asked woman where was the best place in town to get a great view of the mountains.  She suggested the Japanese and Rose Gardens and gave me tips on how to get there.

starbucksI needed to pump before venturing out to the gardens so, after looking around and realizing there wasn’t a private space to sit, I decided to find a quiet table at Starbucks and that worked well.   I then grabbed a slice of pizza at Pizzicato and made my way to the Japanese garden.  After several hours, of walking, waiting, riding, and asking Portlanders to point me in the right direction I finally arrived at the Japanese Garden.  BUT, it was closed!  I didn’t even think about the hours before I headed out there.  I was able to walk around the Rose Garden and finally found a great view of Mt. Hood, what I was after all along!  I only had 20 min. before I had to hurry back to the bus stop so I wouldn’t miss the last bus of the night!  I finally made it back to Cincy’s house Friday night and I was exhausted!!  I was up at 4:30 am ET and it was 9pm PT!  I had a great day, saw Portland downtown, some gorgeous snow top mountains, and met some exceptionally friendly people who helped me find my way!   It was time to hit the sheets before my seminar in the morning.

portland-08-003My seminar, located at Western States Chiropractic College, went well.  I learned some valuable tools that will benefit many patients.  I took the bus on in the morning Saturday but Cincy was able to drive me home.  We had dinner at the Kenned School, part of the McMenamins chain.  It was a school turned into entertainment facility with several restaurants, hotel rooms, a cigar room, pool, bar, and a large space for weddings and party’s.  It was an interesting, all-in-one hot spot.  We ate in the Boiler room which was really neat!  On Sunday a woman I met at the seminar offered to pick me up on Sunday, which was wonderful!  On Sunday evening after my seminar was complete, Cincy and I went out to eat at a great Tai restaurant within walking distance.  I think it’s so nice that she can walk to the grocery, restaurants, shops and boutiques, and has access to public transportation throughout the city.  I see why Portland is one of the most Green Cities in the country.  I also learned that they don’t fluorinate their water, which is super cool!  Learn more about how Portland is a Leader in Green cities here.

Me and Cincy, Can you tell I haden't adjusted to west coast time, my eyes are so tired here!

Me and Cincy

I definately enjoyed my trip to Portland, but I was glad to be heading home on Monday.  I missed Greg and Jack a lot!  I would love to go back to Portland some day on a family trip and spend more time exploring the nature and wildlife Portland and the nothwest has to offer!

Pumping On The Road Again: Portland Bound

Today I left for a weekend chiropractic seminar in Portland, OR.  A lot of pumping is also in store for me with another weekend away from my nursing baby!  This should be the last separation for a while and I’m elated about that!  I miss my baby and hubby already!  I left early and stopped in Minneapolis, where I am sitting now killing time until I depart to Portland.  I’m glad Minneapolis is not my final destination… as soon as we landed I looked out and it was very gray and dreary out my window.  I do love Minnesota, the land of 10,000 Lakes, in the spring and summer but it doesn’t seem very pleasant this time of year.  As for the pumping, right now I am debating weather to pump before my flight leaves 10:25 ET or to wait and pump on the plane closer to Jack’s typical mealtime 11-noonish.

Here is 9-month-old Jack’s typical schedule – with typical being relative.  “Typical” can very widely from day to day.  We have been trying to move Jack a little more in the direction of having a general schedule vs. previously having no schedule at all!  It has been putting a toll on Greg and I, and I think Jack too.  Hopefully this will also help with his sleeping (still not sleeping through the night)… but that could be another blog for another day.  So back to the schedule:

5:00am-7:00ish – Wake up and nurse and play

8:00am-8:30ish – solid meal then more playing – usually plain organic yogurt with fruit, veggies, and a vitamin D drop (sun isn’t shinning much these days in the Midwest.

9:30am-11:00ish – down for a nap somewhere during this time – some days 30 min. some days 1 hour

10:30am – noon-ish – Upon waking from nap – nursing

About 1 hr after nursing – 2nd Solid meal, and playing, then off to our Chiropractic Office in New Albany, OH.

1:30-4:00ish – here’s where the “typical” gets wider and wider – down for nap #2 – usually 30-90 min., then playing

2:00pm-8:00pm-ish???Nursing 1-2 more times, playing, and heading home from the office and dinner for mom and dad – not necessarily in that order

8:00-9:30pm-ish  - (our new attempt at a nighttime schedule) Nursing, bath or baby massage, reading books, singing and rocking, prayers and bed.

After 9:30 - exhausted mom and dad watch some TV, read, study, blog, knit, build a fire, or more often, just go straight to bed.

Late night – occasional nursing, but rarely will allow him to nurse after 1am.  Lately he has been doing better about not getting a late night nursing, unless we are too tired to put energy into getting him back to sleep if he wakes.

Back to the pumping decision… Reflecting back on my experience pumping in Vegas, which you can read more about here, it was o.k.  One thing I noticed during that trip, is the further into my trip I was, the more I had to pump.  The more I pumped the more milk I produced.  I wasn’t too worried about it then because I knew I needed a milk supply to take home with me and replace the stores Jack used for my upcoming Portland trip.  This time around I’d like to try and prevent the increased milk production beyond what Jack needs.  So I will try to space out my pumping a much as possible while still making sure I get at least 5 sessions in a day and, that I don’t get mastitis from engorgement, which I am very prone to.   I know there are pumping, working or traveling moms out there who are desperately worried about diminishing their supply.  Thankfully I don’t have that worry, but pumping isn’t without its obstacles.   Pumping on the plane to and from Vegas was a pleasant experience.  I sat next to two ladies who were very respectful and inquisitive.  They shared stories of when their children were babies and how pumps have come a long way from when they were moms.  I enjoyed talking to them and was glad that I could relax and feel comfortable with pumping in such a small and public place.

Sooo anyway, I decided to wait and pump on the plane.

Due to no free internet at the Minneapolis airport (bummer!) I’ll be posting this later.

Pumping in Vegas

I’m back at the Las Vegas airport where I access free internet!  To log on in our hotel it was going to be $14/day, or $8 for 15 min. in the business center… whatever happened to free wireless in hotels?  I think everyone really enjoyed Angie’s Bachelorette weekend get-a-way.  With my breast pump in tote I have almost made it through my first weekend away from Jack, hopefully without any mastitis.  It was a little strange carrying it around everywhere I went, and pumping in the nightclub bathroom, that was interesting, with the base booming in the background.  Everyone arrived by lunchtime Friday.  We checked out a Mexican restaurant connected to our hotel.  It was great food but pricy, but that’s Vegas.  We relaxed in the hotel for a while then went to a really cool dueling piano bar.  I’m not much of a bar person but I do enjoy the great music and entertainment at piano bars.  Saturday we enjoyed sleeping in and then hit the shops and checked out some of the casino resorts.  We had a great lunch at Caesars Palace then headed back to the room to get ready for Angie’s big night out.  When all the girls had their hair curled and heels on we kicked the night off with a riming story, “Angie’s Party in Vegas”.  We recapped night one and plotted night too, with small gifts for her to open as part of our story.  By the end of the poem she had some nice gifts and was decked out in the ultimate bachelorette attire.  We went to 2 clubs, both really cool.  We were such a great looking bunch that we got free admission and drinks at both.  I headed back early with Angie’s future mother and sister – law since I’m not the night owl that the others are, but it was a great time.  Not much gambling though, maybe next time.
