Week in Review

Greg and or I have had a cold on and off for the past 2 weeks (so far Jack has stayed healthy) so we’ve been a bit behind on everyday life, including blogging and my online class. Also my computer decided to malfunction last week. Thankfully a family friend took it to work on it for a week. I can hardly go a day without a computer but I didn’t sweat it because we had Greg’s laptop…. so I thought. Until his battery charger started sparking!! So there went our computers for the week ugh! Jack is doing well, exploring new foods, crawling like a speed racer and doing lots of standing (with support of course, however he did stand along for maybe 1-2 seconds yesterday). Today he climbed up 1 step by himself.

Over the weekend Greg went to the Ohio State Chiropractic Association convention to fulfill his continuing education hours. Jack and I met him for lunch on Saturday and also saw one of our former classmates, Dave, who gave us some good marketing tips for our office. Jack and I then headed to grandma and grandpa A’s house. The plan was that I could study for my online class while my parents spent time with Jack. It didn’t exactly play out that way. After I arrived in Dayton, my cold, which I thought was gone, decided to come back with a vengeance and I did not have the mental clarity to get any productive studying done. Plus, my parents got tied up with football and shopping for my sister’s wedding which is 2 weeks away. Sunday Jack and Grandma played in the morning then we joined my mom and aunt and grandma who were shopping for wedding attire. Finally Jack and I headed back to Columbus. It wasn’t exactly the trip I had planned but I was glad that Jack got to spend some time with Grandma and Grandpa and that I was able to bring my mom some rehab equipment for her back, even though I didn’t get my studying done. Today I stayed home to try to kick this cold while Greg managed the office. I’m hoping Jack doesn’t get sick. He sounds a bit like he has a frog in his throat but he is just as active as usual, nothing else out of the ordinary. I’ve been trying to feed Jack often so he will get some good antibodies from me and I’ve been loading up on the vitamin C, Echinacea and some additional immune boosting vitamins. Hopefully that will do the trick. I’m so glad Greg was able to let me rest today. I will give him a break later in the week so he can have some extra down time with Jack; I know he could use the break from work!

Current Projects: In my spare time (when I can find it), I’ve been doing some research on a few topics and hope to write some informative posts as I conclude my research, which may be a little while.

1. Skin Care and Make-up – I’m trying to find natural, toxin free make-up and skin care products. I have learned that even though a product says “natural” or comes from the health food store, doesn’t mean it is healthy. I have also learned the Mary Kay make-up I was using is loaded with toxins according to http://www.cosmeticdatabase.com. I have been sampling a few companies and hope to find one I’m happy with soon.

2. Toys – I’ve been looking for some time now to find some easy guidelines for shopping for safe, toxin-free baby toys. I have found some websites that have great, toys which is wonderful for me and those who like to shop online. However I have some relatives who want to shop for Jack and are not exactly computer savvy shop online. I’m hoping to compile some info for safe toy shopping at your local toy store. I would love for it to be as simple as saying toy brand A is good and brand B is bad, but it doesn’t seem to be that cut and dry.

Pumping in Vegas

I’m back at the Las Vegas airport where I access free internet!  To log on in our hotel it was going to be $14/day, or $8 for 15 min. in the business center… whatever happened to free wireless in hotels?  I think everyone really enjoyed Angie’s Bachelorette weekend get-a-way.  With my breast pump in tote I have almost made it through my first weekend away from Jack, hopefully without any mastitis.  It was a little strange carrying it around everywhere I went, and pumping in the nightclub bathroom, that was interesting, with the base booming in the background.  Everyone arrived by lunchtime Friday.  We checked out a Mexican restaurant connected to our hotel.  It was great food but pricy, but that’s Vegas.  We relaxed in the hotel for a while then went to a really cool dueling piano bar.  I’m not much of a bar person but I do enjoy the great music and entertainment at piano bars.  Saturday we enjoyed sleeping in and then hit the shops and checked out some of the casino resorts.  We had a great lunch at Caesars Palace then headed back to the room to get ready for Angie’s big night out.  When all the girls had their hair curled and heels on we kicked the night off with a riming story, “Angie’s Party in Vegas”.  We recapped night one and plotted night too, with small gifts for her to open as part of our story.  By the end of the poem she had some nice gifts and was decked out in the ultimate bachelorette attire.  We went to 2 clubs, both really cool.  We were such a great looking bunch that we got free admission and drinks at both.  I headed back early with Angie’s future mother and sister – law since I’m not the night owl that the others are, but it was a great time.  Not much gambling though, maybe next time.

Viva Las Vegas!!

Its 9:30 am Eastern Time and I am on the plane heading to Las Vegas for the weekend for my sister, Angie’s Bachelorette party.  This is my first time being away from Jack.  I’m a little nervous but also looking forward to a great weekend get-a-way.  Daddy will be texting me cute pictures of Jack all weekend!  As I was nursing this morning I was a little sad that I wouldn’t see him for 3 full days.  It may not sound like long to the average person but if you’re a new mom I’m sure you can relate with me when I sounds like eternity!  I have been storing up breast milk since July, waking up late at night here and there to pump.  I should have plenty now.  Jack is still nursing about 6 times a day, some days 8 times.  He’s also eating 2 solid meals, a larger breakfast and smaller lunch.  Although, this past week he’s been turning his nose up to his usual favorites.  I’m thinking maybe his gums are bothering him.  Still no teeth yet, but it can’t be too far away.

I should arrive in Vegas in another 2 hours.  I will be meeting my sisters Angie and Erica, cousin Ashley, Angie’s future mother and sister in-law, and her friends Nicole and Ali.  There may be more but that’s all I can remember right now.  It should be a great weekend, hopefully not too crazy.  I’m not really the crazy type J.  I will update the blog later in my trip.  Until then, have a great weekend!

Greener Future Friday: Lower Your Electric Bill!

Who wouldn’t want to lower their monthly bills and save some energy at the same time!  My green tip for the week is to work on lowering that electric bill!  I already posted on trading your incandescent light bulbs for CFL’s.  Another great way to save electricity is to unplug electronics and chargers when they are not in use.  There is a small amount of electricity used when computers are plugged even when they are not in use, when cell phone charges are left plugged into the outlet even when the phone is not attached.  I’ve been going around the house this week, unplugging appliances and electronics that aren’t in use such as my kitchen aid mixer, piano key board, cell charger, breast pump, lamps that are rarely turned on, and more.  It’s easy and takes very little time.  And with the economy down who wouldn’t want to lower their bill!
